Are Your Beneficiary Designations Up To Date??

Q: If you died tomorrow...who would get the $50,000 in life insurance that the City would pay out for full time employees??

Q: If you died tomorrow...who would receive pay-outs from your pension?

Q: If you died tomorrow...who would receive your 401K or 457 funds??

DO YOU HAVE YOUR BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS AT THE CITY UP-TO-DATE TODAY??

Your beneficiary is the person you elect to receive a benefit in the event of your death.  Electing beneficiaries, and keeping your choice up-to-date, allows you to make the decision as to who receives your money.

YOUR LISTED BENEFICIARIES OVERRIDE YOUR WILL!  Please make sure that your information is current.

If you had named your parents beneficiaries before you were married, for example, your parents--not your spouse--can inherit your account, unless you update your designations.  A former spouse could inherit your 401k or 457 account if you don't update your beneficiary designation after a divorce!

1.  To check on your MetLife Basic and Voluntary Life Insurance Beneficiaries:

All benefits eligible employees need beneficiary designations for basic life ($50,000) and any voluntary life insurance.  You can check on who your beneficiaries are online in the BOSS system.  Enter your user name and password (last four of your social security number is your initial password), and under my profile on the left hand side of the screen, click on beneficiaries.

2.  To check on your ICMARC 401k/457 beneficiaries:

If you are benefits eligible and contribute to 401K or 457, go to the ICMARC website.  You can create a new user ID by following the link on the homepage and putting in some general information.  You will then have access to the website to see who you have listed as beneficiaries, and make changes as necessary.

3.  To check on your URS Pension beneficiaries:

If you have a URS pension, go to the Utah Retirement Systems website to check on the beneficiaries you have designated.  The homepage will have a box at the top right of the screen to log in to your "my urs" account.  You can create an account by following the link create account.  You will need your account number beginning with the letter W.  Don't know it??  Just simply call URS at 800-695-4877 or 800-688-4015 and ask.

Quilts for Police Cars

l-r Chief Scott Finlayson, Carol Huff, Cheryl Pfeifer, Stacy Anderson

The Utah Quilt Guild, an organization of quilters throughout the State of Utah, offered to provide police departments throughout the state with quilts for children.  Their letter to the Utah Chiefs and Sheriffs in February said: "In light of recent events that have touched our country, the members of the Utah Quilt Guild would like to offer your department some quilts that may provide warmth and comfort to children touched by tragedy in your area.  The guild would like to create and donate a quilt for emergency vehicles in your department."

As a member of the Utah Quilt Guild, and also Springville Police Department, Cheryl Pfeifer "adopted" Springville Police and coordinated the gathering of these quilts. Several City employees, including Stacy Anderson (Courts), Carol Huff (Dispatch) and Doris Weight (Treasury) contributed quilts.  The ladies at the Senior Citizens' Center donated a quilt.  The rest of the quilts were made by citizens in the area.  So far over 20 quilts have been collected with more coming in .  Thanks to all who gave of their time for this effort.  The children the police officers give these quilts to will cherish them.

A Message from Troy on Sick Leave Buy Back and Pooling

As an incentive to stay healthy, the City offers to ‘buy back’ up to three days of sick leave per year.   Employees will see this buy back on the pay check that comes in two weeks.  Participation in this program is optional.  Since most employees want whatever buy back they have earned, we are asking employees that don’t want to sell their sick leave to inform Hilary or Doris by November 15.
The buy back amount is calculated in a fairly complex manner.  If an employee took 4 sick days during the past year, an employee could sell back 16 hours of sick leave so long as the employee has 96 hours left in their sick leave bank after the buy back.  Here is the formula:  Hours of sick leave bought back = 24 - ((Hours of sick leave used during the past 12 months / 96) * 24.)  The hours are then multiplied by your hourly rate and the amounts are added to your check after taxes are taken out.  The City pays out about $68,000 to employees under this program.
Another program that is offered to employees is the Sick Leave Pool.  It is with great fortune that we have not used this pool extensively over the past few years.  The Pool allows employees to donate leave time to the Pool and then Pool dollars can be used to help another employee that is suffering from an unusually grave or serious injury or sickness.  Vacation hours and/or sick leave hours eligible for buy back can be donated to the Pool.  Thus, if any of you are interested in donating to the Pool, now is a great time to do it.
Donated hours are converted to a dollar amount and kept in the Pool until used.  No money comes out of the Pool unless there is a recommendation to use it from the Employee’s Association.
Employee’s often are motivated to donate by a specific employee’s circumstances.  As you consider donating, please note that once the dollars enter the Pool, they are tagged for any sick or injured employee, not a specific one.  Also note that the employee receiving the benefit is under no obligation to repay any amounts used.
The Sick Leave policy has a lot in it.  Take a moment to review policy 19 in your handbook to remind yourself of all of the details.  As usual, if you have questions, talk to your supervisor or Administration.

Harold the Canyon Parks Chicken

Today's post is contributed by Dave Vincent, Canyon Parks Supervisor.  Thanks, Dave!

Harold is a Pyle Leghorn rooster that was dropped off at Jolleys Ranch 3 1/2 years ago. When Kim Francom and I found him we were concerned that somebody would shoot him while turkey hunting. So Kim lured him in with dry cat food and I caught him with a fishing net and brought him to the Canyon Parks compound. Soon after Harold's arrival to the compound we noticed him eating Box Elder Bugs through out the yard. Since Harold has lived in the canyon parks compound there has been a significant decline in the Box Elder Bug population.

Harold likes to get on top of the backhoe and crow at everybody teeing off of number 14 tee box at the golf course and sometimes runs to the corner of the yard to heckle the golfers teeing off of number 18. Many golfers look for Harold when ever they are about to tee off and will talk to him from across the parking lot. Harold also acts as the canyon parks watch dog and will charge after anyone that comes into the compound that does not belong in there.

We have always felt Harold was a beautiful bird so I entered him in the 2013 Utah County Fair. While at the fair Harold won ribbons in the following categories; best of show, 1st place, special award and he qualified for the state fair.

Sign in begins at 8:00am.  Sonny will determine when the actual tournament starts.
We currently have 12 teams signed up.

Next week I’ll be sending out a new updated tournaments rule sheet.  I’m looking for 3-4 employee who will be playing in the tournament to work with me on putting some new rules together.  Please email if you are interested jgleave@springville.org.

This is a fun event.  Hobble Creek Golf Course is BEAUTIFUL this time of year.  - John Gleave 801.491.7810

Stop by and visit!

An employee asked me the other day if he could just stop by and visit – do you have an ‘open door’ policy?  The answer is yes, yes, yes!  If you have a thought, a concern, an idea or if you just want to say ‘hi,’ please stop in.  Every employee can see whether I am generally available by making a meeting through outlook.  You can also call Hilary, Crystal or Christie to check up on my availability.

Years ago, when I was involved in a lot of the hiring, I knew almost everyone.  Lately, there are a lot of faces I don’t recognize.  Please make sure you introduce yourself to me.  I would love to get to know you.  If you have an idea for the City, please share it.  Call, email, text or visit.

The only way we can make improvements is if we know there is a problem.  The only way I can let the Council know we are doing something right is if someone lets me know.  Letting us know is your obligation.
